How can I save money on my electric bill?
You can save money by change your incandescent lights to fluorescent lights. Installing dimmers, motions sensors, and occupancy sensors will help save energy. You can also save money by sparingly using appliances that use a lot of amps. Some of the highest amp consuming appliances are; air conditioners, electric heaters, electric hot water heater and electric cloths dryer. Insulating your home and installing an insulating blanked around your hot water heater will help save energy.

What does G.F.I. mean?
A G.F.I. or G.F.C.I is a ground-fault circuit interrupter. When you look at a 120-volt 15 Amp outlet there are two vertical slots and then a round hole centered below them. The left slot is slightly larger than the right. The left slot is called "neutral," the right slot is called "hot" and the hole below them is called "ground." If an appliance is working properly, all electricity that the appliance uses will flow from hot to neutral. A GFCI monitors the amount of current flowing from hot to neutral. If there is any imbalance, it trips the circuit. It is able to sense a mismatch as small as 4 or 5 milliamps, and it can react as quickly as one-thirtieth of a second. GFCI outlet or breakers are generally used in bathrooms, kitchen, outside, or any place that may usual encounter water.

Is aluminum wire or knob-and-tube wire safe?
Both types of wires are hazardous which can create a problem when insuring your house. Aluminum can be hazardous if it is not installed properly because of corrosion and heat issues when using under sized wires. Aluminum is permitted by N.E.C, but should only be installed buy a certified electrician. Knob-and-tube wire is not permitted by N.E.C in Section 324-4. [Uses Not Permitted] (Concealed knob-and-tube wire shall not be installed, modified or extended for all new or existing uses, under new work, remodel, renovations, alterations and additions.) It is our opinion that copper be used. If you are concerned about how your house is wired or want an evaluation please feel free to contact us.

What happens if you use a two prong cheater plug instead of a 3 prong plug?
You have disabled an important safety feature that protects you from electric shock. If for some reason the electrical cord to your appliance becomes squashed it could energize the appliance. For instance, when installing a refrigerator you need to pug it in and push the refrigerator back against the wall. As you’re pushing the refrigerator back the cord could become squashed which could energize the metal-encasing. The idea behind grounding is to protect the people who use metal-encased appliances from electric shock. The casing is connected directly to the ground prong.
